History of American Crane Services

Our Founders: Jim & Donna Warrington

American Crane Services is rooted in the remarkable life and career of James Warrington, known throughout the Atlanta crane industry as “Indian Jim.” Jim’s passion for cranes began in 1966 in Detroit, Michigan, when he started oiling for his father. Born on the Menominee Indian Reservation in Wisconsin, Jim comes from a proud lineage of warriors who served in the military with honor. Following their example, he volunteered for the draft in 1967, serving 14 months in Vietnam. His bravery and selflessness earned him numerous honors and commendations. Jim remains proud of his service and his heritage as a Native American veteran.

After his discharge from the army, Jim immersed himself in the crane industry, working alongside his father and brother. Over the decades, he held various roles, including crane operator, inspector, rigger, erector, dismantler, consultant, and sales manager. His innovative spirit led him to establish a crane inspection business before third-party inspections became mandatory, and he also provided rigging services. During his tenure as a sales manager for a large crane company, Jim built lasting relationships throughout the Southeast, which inspired him to pursue his lifelong dream of owning his own company.

In January 2007, that dream became a reality when Jim and his wife Donna founded American Crane Services. Starting with just one 28-ton boom truck, they expanded the company over the next seven years to include five cranes, each operated by qualified professionals, along with two crane inspectors. As the company grew, so did its offerings, which expanded to include hoisting services, third-party inspections, rigging and signaling training, equipment training, crane erection and dismantle services, and consulting.

Jim credits Donna’s invaluable contributions to the company’s success. She managed all administrative tasks, including accounting, payroll, taxes, compliance, training materials, inspection forms, and customer service, learning the intricacies of the crane industry as the business grew. Their partnership ensured that American Crane Services consistently delivered services of the highest standard.

By 2020, after 14 successful years, Jim passed the leadership of the company to Wayne “Opie” Abercrombie to meet the growing demands of the industry and guide the company into its next chapter. However, Jim continues to lend his expertise and knowledge wherever needed, remaining an integral part of the team.

Jim attributes the company’s success to God’s blessings, always giving Him praise for the opportunities and growth he has experienced. His faith and gratitude continue to inspire those around him, leaving a lasting legacy at American Crane Services.
